World Chocolate Day · Maldives · Culinary Memories
A warm celebration of cacao, pastry craftsmanship, and a name from my culinary journey.

Every year on July 7, chocolate lovers around the world celebrate World Chocolate Day. This year, here in the Maldives, I decided to bring back a name from my own culinary journey: Cioccolatissimo.
The word Cioccolatissimo comes from Italian. It suggests something deeply connected to chocolate: generous, rich, playful, and full of pleasure. Not just chocolate, but chocolate in its most joyful expression.
For this occasion, the name became the identity of a special chocolate corner prepared for the evening buffet, a small celebration dedicated to cacao, pastry creativity, and the simple happiness that chocolate brings to the table.
A Name from My Culinary Journey
For me, Cioccolatissimo is not a name invented only for this occasion. It is a word connected to my own professional memories.
More than ten years ago, when I was working as an Executive Chef in Europe, themed coffee breaks were very popular. I used to create different concepts for events, meetings, and corporate gatherings, and one of the most requested was called Cioccolatissimo.
At that time, it was a generous chocolate-themed coffee break, built around a selection of around twenty-five different types of chocolate. Different textures, flavours, shapes, and small sweet moments came together in one experience dedicated entirely to chocolate.
Bringing this name back today, here in the Maldives, feels like reconnecting a memory from my European career with my present island life. The setting is different, the guests are different, and the atmosphere is different, but the idea remains the same: creating a moment of pleasure through chocolate.
A buffet corner is not only about food. Sometimes, it is about creating a small memory.
A Small Story Inside the Buffet
In a resort buffet, details matter. Guests walk through the restaurant, notice something different, pause for a second, take a closer look, maybe take a photo, and then taste.
That small pause is important. It turns a buffet corner into an experience.
This was the purpose of Cioccolatissimo: not to make chocolate complicated, but to make it visible, inviting, generous, and memorable.
Truffles, pralines, crispy bites, chocolate bars, colourful sweets, and small pastry creations came together in one chocolate-inspired display. The idea was simple: to create a moment of happiness around an ingredient that everyone understands.
Why Chocolate Still Matters
Chocolate has a long journey behind it. It begins with cacao, an ingredient connected to ancient cultures, rituals, craftsmanship, trade, and transformation.
Over time, cacao travelled across continents and slowly became part of the way people celebrate, share, and enjoy food. Today, chocolate is everywhere, but it has never lost its emotional power.
It can be elegant, nostalgic, comforting, playful, or simply delicious. It can remind us of childhood, travel, celebrations, or a quiet moment at the end of a meal.
Perhaps this is why chocolate is understood everywhere. Different cultures may enjoy it in different ways, but the feeling it creates is almost universal.
Chocolate in the Maldives
Celebrating World Chocolate Day in the Maldives creates a beautiful contrast. The islands are usually connected with the ocean, tropical light, fresh flavours, and barefoot elegance.
Chocolate brings another dimension: warmth, depth, richness, and comfort.
Bringing these two worlds together was the most interesting part of the idea. A chocolate corner in the middle of an island buffet becomes more than a dessert selection. It becomes a small celebration.
The Chef’s View
As a chef, I like chocolate because it is both technical and emotional. It requires attention, patience, balance, and respect for the ingredient.
At the same time, chocolate remains one of the simplest pleasures people can share. A piece of chocolate does not need much explanation. It speaks through texture, flavour, aroma, and memory.
With Cioccolatissimo, the goal was not to create something overly formal. The goal was to create a sweet moment with personality, a little Italian touch, and a sense of joy.
World Chocolate Day is a reminder that food does not always need to be complicated to be meaningful. Sometimes, one good idea, one beautiful corner, and one loved ingredient are enough.
And tonight, here in the Maldives, we celebrated chocolate our way.
Happy World Chocolate Day
